Axzora Pvt. Ltd and EthernetXpress Pvt. Ltd in association with the Directorate of Women and Child Development, Goa, and Assocham, Goa, are all set for the official launch of Shrimati, a biodegradable sanitary napkin brand, on May 30 at the Village Panchayat Hall, Sristhal, Canacona.

Project SHRIMATI, the flagship project of Enactus Jamia Islamia aims to manufacture eco-friendly and reusable sanitary pads while creating awareness of menstrual health and hygiene. Banana and bamboo fibre are used in the production of these pads made of three biodegrabable layers. These are durable, economical, and a healthier option as compared to basic sanitary pads that have possibility of causing deadly diseases.

The project has received the National CSR award and emerged winner of the 2022 Enactus Global Race for climate action at the Enactus World Cup.

At the launch on May 30, about 1,200 reusable sanitary napkins will be distributed targeting the underprivileged section of the society. The event will be inaugurated by speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly Ramesh Tawadkar and will be attended by sarpanch of Shristhal Sejal Gaonkar, sarpanch of Painguin Savita Tawadkar and about 300 local women.

Speaking at a press conference, co-ordinator and representative for Axzora and EthernetXpress Pvt. Ltd. Gunjan Sharma said, “For us, access to sanitary napkins is not a privilege, it is a basic necessity. There are still women who don’t have easy access to basic menstrual products. There are four problems that our organisations has identified – plastic waste, menstrual hygiene and health, sanitary waste disposal, and unemployment. After analysing and research on these problems, our team came up with the idea of biodegradable eco-friendly sanitary napkins which can be reused and lasts up to 12 months.”

Director of Women and Child Development Dipali Naik said, “To commemorate Menstrual Hygiene Day (May 28), along with the launch of these pads, we will explain menstrual hygiene and health, other informative programmes, and distribute the sanitary pads to tribal ladies.”

Chairperson, Women’s Wing, GCCI Pallavi Salgaocar said, “Menstrual hygiene is a human rights issue not just health issue. Many women in India lack access to menstrual products and sanitation facilities. Poor menstrual hygiene undercuts fundamental rights including right to work and going to school. So keeping in mind the need of awareness on right to hygiene, we have come together with EthernetXpress and Axzora Pvt Ltd and Woman and Child Development Department to educate and give good sanitation facility and eco-friendly menstrual products.”

Shrimati will also be available on Amazon after the launch.

“Our main aim is to give employment to the underprivileged women. At the Porvorim unit, we have local and underprivileged women working in the production unit,” says Sharma, adding that they hope to set up a bigger manufacturing unit in South Goa in the near future.
