In value terms, Canada ($813M) constituted the largest supplier of sanitary towels, tampons, napkins and diapers to the United States, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($343M), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 15% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Canada stood at +3.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mexico (+4.8% per year) and China (+10.8% per year).

In 2024, approx. 178K tons of sanitary towels, tampons, napkins and diapers were exported from the United States; approximately reflecting 2023 figures. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 361%. The exports peaked at 191K tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2024, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sanitary towel and diaper exports dropped to $853M in 2024. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $906M. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Canada (131K tons) was the main destination for sanitary towel and diaper exports from the United States, with a 74% share of total exports. Moreover, sanitary towel and diaper exports to Canada exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mexico (14K tons), tenfold. The Dominican Republic (5.4K tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 3% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Canada stood at +1.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+6.4% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+4.0% per year).
In value terms, Canada ($673M) remains the key foreign market for sanitary towels, tampons, napkins and diapers exports from the United States, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mexico ($62M), with a 7.2% share of total exports. It was followed by the Dominican Republic, with a 2% share.
From 2013 to 2023, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Canada amounted to +1.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mexico (+10.1% per year) and the Dominican Republic (+3.7% per year).
In 2023, the average sanitary towel and diaper export price amounted to $4,887 per ton, increasing by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 307%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $19,534 per ton. From 2017 to 2023, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2023, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($5,147 per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($2,298 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
